Revolutionary, rebellious and radical – three “r” words that describe the new Ocean Alexander 90R. A complete departure from OA’s typical exteriors (and interiors for that matter), the new 90-footer is described as revolutionary by the company but what’s a revolution without a few radicals?

The two things you’ll notice when you first spot the OA 90R are her profile and her transom. As a tri-deck yacht, she’s a tall boat with a full, nearly plumb bow. Her irregularly-shaped windows and numerous sharp angles give her an almost camouflaged appearance, as if there’s not really one set of lines that define her profile, but many. She looks nothing like the original Ocean Alexander 90, which was introduced years ago and is much more traditional.

The second feature is the wow factor for anyone who actually has the privilege to come aboard. A large swim platform leads into a “beach club” on the same level. For those who have recreated on a platform and thought they had it good, this takes lounging to another level. With curved sliding doors, the beach club opens to showcase an L-shaped settee to port and a wet bar topped by a flatscreen TV to starboard. When inside looking out, the entire transom seems like a wall of glass topped by skylights that bring in even more sunshine. Whether cruised in hot or cold climates, the OA 90R will host many daytime and some evening gatherings in this decadent space.

The radical thinking continues inside. The salon on the main deck extends from the aft cockpit that will seat eight for an al fresco lunch, forward to the galley with sumptuous living and dining room areas in between. If professionally crewed, the yacht’s galley may be closed off with a partition for guest privacy.

Dramatic floor-to-ceiling windows and lowered bulwarks amidships provide impeccable views even when seated inside. The master suite is on the main deck and forward, occupying most of the yacht’s 22-foot beam. There are his and hers closets and again, the use of glass is generous. Unlike many other models that create a closed hotel-like experience, no one on the OA 90R will be able to (or will want to) forget that they’re on the water, enjoying an outdoor adventure.

Liberal use of stone extends from the upper deck bar countertops to the heads throughout the ship. And of course, the OA 90R includes a full set of linens, china and flatware, table linens and glassware, galley pots and pans, fenders, lines, and more. It’s truly a plug-and-play experience for the new owners.

Ocean Alexander builds semi-custom yachts and to that end there are layout options on the lower deck in terms of cabin configuration (2-4) and on the bridge where you can choose an open flybridge or an enclosed skylounge. Carbon fiber in the bridge construction keeps the weight down and lowers the center of gravity overall even on this tall grande dame.

At the helm, twin captain’s chairs are fronted by a dash including an array of four multifunction displays ahead and engine controls to the right. To starboard is a full bar and to port a seating area with loose furniture for maximum versatility. Outside is another bar and more exterior seating. However, because Ocean Alexander allows significant owner input, the bridge deck may include a single bar, an integrated interior settee or even a Jacuzzi on the aft deck flanked by an enormous sunpad.

The beam is carried well forward to the broad bow that creates another opportunity for guest enjoyment. A U-shaped settee for six faces forward to take in the sights while at anchor and a sunpad that can easily accommodate four is just ahead. That still leaves plenty of room on the bow for the crew to work with the anchor and windlass. And speaking of the crew, there are two cabins plus a small lounge and head on the lower deck just forward of the beach club that will be nice accommodations for staff.

Powered by twin MTU 1600-hp diesels, the OA 90R looks like she was built to go far and to get there fast. With 3,000 gallons of fuel, she’s no day boat but instead a cruiser that will take eight on sun-splashed adventures. Hull #1 graced US shores at the Fort Lauderdale boat show after arriving here from the Taiwanese factory. The revolutionary design’s siblings are bound to pop up soon at other destinations.

The OA 90R is a collaboration between the Ocean Alexander team, naval architect Evan Marshall and Italian firm Arrabito. The company is convinced that had they attempted this unorthodox styling only five years ago, it wouldn’t have been accepted. In fact, in their 40 years in existence, the builder hasn’t ventured in this direction until now. Times have changed.

Other models in this series are on the drawing board so it seems the revolution has sprouted a following. Of course, market acceptance will dictate how far this change of aesthetic takes Ocean Alexander but for now, all we can say is it’s truly revolutionary.
